Supporting Teenage Cancer Trust

in memory of Oli

Our Mission

oli headshot.jpeg

Oli was a fun loving, outgoing and caring young man who died of a brain tumour, just 18 years old in 2005. We know that Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity he would have admired and in many ways their approach, ethos and style are so well matched to his outlook on life. That’s why we set out to raise £1m in his name, supporting young people with cancer and their families in the UK and creating a legacy for Oli at the same time.

Every few hours a young person will hear the words “You have cancer”.  Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity providing specialised nursing care and expert youth support for young people with cancer. They are there for anyone diagnosed with cancer aged 13-24, and their loved ones too. They fund specialist nurses, youth workers and hospital wards within the NHS, so young people with cancer get the sensitive, individual care and support they need at this unique and critical life stage.  Every penny raised by the Oli Mills Foundation goes directly to the charity for them to spend where it is needed most.

“Cancer is tough. Teenage Cancer Trust’s work puts young people in the best possible place, physically, mentally, and emotionally, for their cancer treatment and beyond. As a charity, we’re dependent on donations, which is why we’re so very grateful to the Oli Mills Foundation, for their long-standing dedicated support.”

CEO of Teenage Cancer Trust, Julie Worrall.

OUR STORY

When Oli died at the Royal Free hospital in 2005, he was being treated on a ward with much older people, so whilst the care was first class, the environment wasn't ideal. When he died, his Mother, Sarah, and brother, Eddie, found Teenage Cancer Trust, and decided it would be the perfect charity to support in his name.

After 10 years we realised we’d raised over £100,000 and the appetite to keep going was strong so we marked his tenth anniversary by officially creating the Oli Mills Foundation, essentially a movement of friends, family, businesses and organisations which has seen us superpower our work for Teenage Cancer Trust.

In the 11 years since we have raised a further £600,000 in a huge variety of ways - from running the London Marathon in reverse at 2am the morning of the official race, ‘Mills Matches’ at his school, Verulam, to annual Golf Days and Christmas cake and prosecco gatherings. We even  made a special appearance on BBC1’s One Show in 2023!

Naturally, we have made some great friends at Teenage Cancer Trust and they inspire us to continue our work. In continuing to support the work they do, we make a huge difference to the lives of teenagers and young people who suffer with cancer.

How To Fundraise

If you’re inspired by our story, below are just a few of the ways you can help us raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust

Become a Friend Of The Foundation

We have businesses who donate monthly or annually and others who choose us as their charity partner for one-off events. Partnering with us is a great way to integrate a good news story and help raise funds and awareness.

Take on a challenge

We’ve had so many people take on challenges and raise money for us in the process - from the London Marathon to jumping out of planes, it all adds up!

Attend

an event

We have regular fundraising events that are also a great way to meet other supporters and have fun in the process. If you’re a golfer, you can already reserve your 4-ball for our 2027 Golf Day at Finchley Golf Club, Friday 28th May.

So far, we have raised over £700,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust in Oli's name!

Friends of the Foundation

Our Friends Of The Foundation play a crucial role in our fundraising effort. Monthly support, sponsorship of our events and the ability to raise awareness with their customer bases and networks are all things they bring to the table. Arnold Ash, Richardsons Solicitors, and HG Construction are hugely valued partners, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their continued support.

Alongside our close connection to Oli’s former school, Verulam, we are always looking to develop new relationships with businesses. Contact us to discuss more.
